I can’t always be Sasha Colby. It would be way too exhausting, and my neck would hurt way too much. [Laughs.] I do turn it on and off. When I’m not having to be out or performing, I don’t listen to a lot of music, and if I do, I listen to music that’s not playing in the Top whale moon sun shirt in contrast I will get this club. I like a lot of sad songs, some classical music. I also love podcasts. I don’t think about drag all the time; I can’t. But on the flip side, I find inspiration in everyday life that could make an interesting number. I love history and civilization and learning about cultures. That takes me out of the drag mindset but also inspires me. I’m obsessed with old-school monarchs and kings and queens, just aesthetically. This is a random tangent, but I listen to this podcast called Noble Blood, and there are a lot of queer stories in it. There’s one about this Chevalier d’Éon who was born a man but lived as a woman in her later life after fighting a war. [Editor’s note: D’Éon was a French diplomat and spy who fought in the Seven Years’ War and infiltrated the court of Empress Elizabeth of Russia presenting as a woman. She lived as a woman from 1777 onward.] This person had a trans experience back then; they all knew. This shows that we are not going anywhere. This is not a fad—we aren’t just popping up like Build-A-Bears!Tell me about your taste in fashion and style. What inspires you?
I’m a millennial, so I’m a Pinterest gal. I’ve had folders since the Top whale moon sun shirt in contrast I will get this early 2000s, probably since most of these girls were not going drag. I’m obsessed with ’90s glamour, I’m obsessed with high gloss, and old-school 1950s actresses. Funny Face is one of my favorite classic movies of all time—the Givenchy! I also love Richard Avedon and Dovima and Suzy Parker. But just when you think I’m just the pageant girl, I’m going to switch it up and make it the cool girl. There are so many incarnations of Sasha that I love. It’s all armor that we put on for safety or to add a little spice to the world. Growing up in Hawaii, there was always that sense of laid-backness. The cool girl was the one that would be sitting at the beach with no makeup on. As a trans woman, for me to be able to get to that point where I didn’t get clocked on the beach and just looked like a local girl…that level of ease is what I always try to have.Sasha Colby’s final runway look, which she described as her “love letter to drag.”
