Yasmeen Ghauri and Shalom Harlow pose in ensembles from Dior’s spring 1998 collection, designed by John Galliano. Photo: Getty ImagesAs far as drag, I love to be weighed down on my arms and feet. Love to be choked [laughs]—maybe that’s drag BDSM, but one reference I always think of is Shalom for Galliano [John Galliano’s spring 1998 ready-to-wear collection for Christian Dior], where she’s sitting on a piano and she’s wearing all of this gold. That red look I just did for the Top welcome to the los angeles lake show 2023 shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this final red carpet—I was like, I need a neck corset. Yes! It’s the first look when she [Erin O’Connor] came out of the carriage. We made a replica. I worked with Thomas Odgen. He also does a lot of looks for Brooke Lynn Heights for Canada’s Drag Race, and Brooke Lynn is turning it with the fashion. We connected through her. He knows so much and just cares so much.Colby worked with Thomas Odgen to replicate the opening look of John Galliano’s fall 2005 couture collection for Dior, on the right, for her finale look. Photo: Marcio MadeiraYou recently spoke about the idea of self-monitoring. I personally relate to that a lot. Do you still find yourself doing it now?
I’m always, as a trans woman, self-monitoring. It’s something we don’t discuss as trans people. People who aren’t trans are fascinated by the Top welcome to the los angeles lake show 2023 shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this transition part, but what’s after the transition, when you’re settled and fully realized in whatever stage you’re at, is you self-monitor. There are those days where you’re like, Is my voice a little too low? There’s always a sense of self-monitoring, and I do it because I don’t want to get clocked, but I’m also on a television show doing drag now, so whatever. [Laughs.]The ship has sailed! Exactly. [Laughs.] I mean, being on television and watching yourself every week in and out of drag—the good, the bad, the no eyebrows, I think it helped a lot. I never had facial-feminization surgery, and I’ve always wanted to do that because it’s a thing that you do. But I’m 38. I’ve lived my entire life with this face, and it’s worked for me. It really allowed me to look at myself in every kind of way that I present to the world and be like, Alright, girl, you look good.
