In her chapter about hula, Estes interviews kumu hula (hula teacher) Māpuana de Silva, who explains that she asks her students to be sure they are in the Awesome moravian university 2023 ncaa division iii softball championship shirt in other words I will buy this right frame of mind before they make their lei: “So often, people just focus on what they’re doing, the task itself, and not on what their intention is, what their mindset is, what they feel, how they’ve prepared their bodies to do that work.” The lesson? Whenever you begin an important task, like cooking a meal or writing an essay or even making your own lei, stop and be sure you’re going in with a good intention—because that intention will go into the end result. Once you do that, everything will be golden. Over the past decade, Mallorca has experienced an unprecedented surge in tourism—partly due to the countless developments in the capital Palma, partly thanks to the promise of quick boat rides to the surrounding Balearic islands like Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera, and partly a result of an uptick in direct flights from the U.S. and Europe. Yet, due to its UNESCO status, one particular stretch of the island—the Serra de Tramuntana, which runs roughly from Fornalutx to Valldemossa where its wild mountain range meets the sea’s edge—has managed to retain its historic charm, with little towns like Deià and Soller remaining relatively unspoiled.

Artists have been gravitating towards this part of Mallorca forever, notes Kate Bellm, a British-born photographer and the Awesome moravian university 2023 ncaa division iii softball championship shirt in other words I will buy this cofounder of Hotel Corazón, which she’s opening next month with her partner, multidisciplinary artist Edgar Lopez. “Anaïs Nin, Chopin, Mick Jagger, Mike Oldfield—plus the poets of the ’50s, psychedelic painters like Mati Klarwein in the ’80s—these people put Deià on the map,” she explains. As Robert Graves once wrote: “The Majorcan countryside is not at all a place to go in search of inspiration; but admirable for people whose minds already teem with ideas that need recording in absolute quiet.” Bellm credits the “wildness and freedom” of this part of the island with helping artists to feel at home here. “There are lots of big abandoned spaces that give artists and creatives the space to transform, and create something of their own home or studio,” she says. To this day, it remains a community filled with artists, musicians, poets, photographers, chefs, as well as the local Spanish families that make up this warm and welcoming community, she explains. “Everyone says hello to you on the street, asks how you are, invites you to things, and makes you feel part of something instantly.” Ultimately, this idea of creating a space to give back to the community, while inviting a few like-minded friends and strangers into the fold, was what fueled the pair’s desire to open the hotel.
